چکیده

– The Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) is a large canopy frugivore common in the seasonal areas of the interior of Brazil. In this study, I evaluated fruit production and analyzed the toucan’s feeding habits in two types of dry forests, one deciduous, although rich in figs, and another semi-deciduous, both in the western Brazil. Both areas exhibited marked fruiting patterns, which peaks overlapped the late dry and early wet seasons. However, in the deciduous forest the fruiting peak resulted mostly of dry fruits, while in the semi-deciduous forest the major peak was widely comprised by fleshy fruits. On the other hand, in the deciduous forest, despite of fluctuations, figs were available all year. In the semi-deciduous forest, the feeding activity varied substantially exhibiting peaks coincident with the extensive consumption of seasonally available fruits, mainly Guibourtia hymenaefolia and Schefflera morototoni. These food resources presented such traits as prolonged availability and lipid-rich diaspores. Conversely, in the deciduous forest Toco Toucans foraged every month, mostly for figs, so that their feeding activity exhibited no significant seasonal differences. Therefore, the exploitation of distinct habitat types caused either by asynchronous or seasonal fruits, emphasizes the importance of habitat mosaics for a large frugivorous bird, such as the Toco Toucan, which wanders for wide areas searching for fruiting patches. Data present here increase our knowledge on the species’ generalistic habits, which at least partly may explain its persistence and wide distribution in the dry interior of Brazil. Toucan and hornbill beaks: a comparative study.

The structure and mechanical behavior of Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) and Wreathed Hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) beaks were compared. The beak of both species is a sandwich-structured composite, having an exterior, or rhamphotheca, consisting of multiple layers of keratin scales and a core composed of a fibrous network of bony closed-cell foam. The rhamphotheca is an arrangement of approxima...

Correlation of the mechanical and structural properties of cortical rachis keratin of rectrices of the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco).

Mechanical characterization of the cortex of rectrices (tail feathers) of the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) has been carried out by tensile testing of the rachis cortex in order to systematically determine Young's modulus and maximum tensile strength gradients on the surfaces and along the length of the feather. Of over seventy-five samples tested, the average Young's modulus was found to be 2....

Sexual dimorphism in Ramphastos toco and Ramphastos dicolorus (Piciformes, Aves).

Phenotypic sexual dimorphism seems to be rare in the Ramphastidae family, except in Pteroglossus viridis and in the genus Selenidera. Many breeders of wild birds believe that specimens of Ramphastos toco can be sexed using bill characteristics. In this study, various discriminant phenotypic variables were analyzed in birds which were sexed cytogenetically. Fifty-one specimens of R. toco and 20 ...

A Measurement of the Angular Power Spectrum of the Cmb From

We report on a measurement of the angular spectrum of the CMB between l ≈ 100 and l ≈ 400 made at 144 GHz from Cerro Toco in the Chilean altiplano. When the new data are combined with previous data at 30 and 40 GHz, taken with the same instrument observing the same section of sky, we find: 1) a rise in the angular spectrum to a maximum with δTl ≈ 85 μK at l ≈ 200 and a fall at l > 300, thereby ...

Collared Forest-Falcon (Micrastur semitorquatus) Preying on Chestnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii) in Costa Rica

—Predator-prey interactions occur regularly in nature; however, predation events are difficult to observe in the canopy of tropical rain forests. We describe a successful capture of a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii) by a Collared ForestFalcon (Micrastur semitorquatus) in Carara National Park, Costa Rica. The predator-prey interaction lasted for ,30 min from the moment of the f...
